Ford Ranger Raptor Delivers an Interior Crafted for Any Condition
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, 30 January 2019 –  It started with a simple sketch. Although it was little more than an early concept, excitement rippled through Ford’s design department as people saw it for the first time. By the time the team had been given the green light to produce the Ranger Raptor, they could hardly wait to put the desert racing pickup truck to the test.

While the commanding exterior immediately sets it apart from other trucks on the road, the interior makes it clear that Ranger Raptor is the true ultimate off-road racing truck. There are little nods to extreme events. For example, the central motif in the seat is like a chest plate that a motorcycle racer would wear.

According to Peter Jones, interior design manager, Ford Asia Pacific, the buzz builds the moment you open the door and see the dramatic sculptured seats that secure the driver in intense performance scenarios. From the stitching to the Miko suede, no detail is overlooked. He describes the interior as a highly functional and technically detailed symbol of all the excitement that desert racing brings to the product.

“The seat is the thing that's going to hold you in position when you're doing that really extreme driving,” he says.

Enthusiasts who like the F-150 Raptor will recognize some of the vehicle’s DNA translated in the Raptor. For example, the color of the instrument cluster is similar to the F-150 Raptor. It’s not Ice Blue like the core Ford Performance product line, which helps set the Ranger Raptor apart.

“Interaction points like seats, steering wheel, paddle shifters, pedals, the instruments – even the start-up sequence – are unique,” Jones adds.

The steering wheel is the central design feature that merges form and function. Take, for example, the red centre marker at the top of the wheel. Design Director for Ford Asia Pacific, Todd Willing, says this is not a frivolous interior design feature. It helps a driver who’s navigating winding conditions understand how to bring the vehicle back to centre.

The steering wheel also reinforces the Ford Performance DNA – the spokes and debossed graphics provide the race styling that’s synonymous with the Performance ethos.

“Another feature on the steering wheel is the cast magnesium paddle shifters. They allow you to hold onto the wheel tightly and shift at the same time without losing any level of control at all,” Willing explains.

Beyond the driver’s seat, Color Materials Manager Jeffrey Liu highlights the cabin experience, indicating that what is inside provides a stark contrast to the tough exterior. While it is a refined aesthetic, there are touches that highlight the heritage of the brand.

“The blue stitching itself was something that we really wanted to bring in that was distinctly Ford Performance,” Liu says.

As the newest member of the Ford Performance lineup, the Ranger Raptor will continue to set capability benchmarks, giving drivers a thrilling experience. The interior is integral to that experience, providing the tactile components that add to the exhilaration.
